Acceptable Defects
Characteristic | Explanation | Prevention |
Checking | A check is a hairline crack no wider than 1mm that occurs only on the surface and does not penetrate through the wood. | This is a natural part of wood aging and is unavoidable, but it can be managed with proper maintenance. Sunlight and dry air are the primary causes of checks. |
Colour and colour change | Colour refers to the natural variation in the wood’s hue and grain pattern. Colour change is when the wood colour changes from it’s original state, which may include the leaching of oxides and tannins in wet conditions. | We cannot guarantee the natural colour of the wood, as variations between planks and individual items are inevitable. Colour change is a natural part of the wood’s aging process, with most woods darkening over time. If the wood is not adequately oiled and is exposed to direct sunlight, it may become sunburnt and develop a silver-grey patina. |
Wood movement | Wood is a natural, living material that expands and contracts with seasonal changes. It shrinks as it dries and swells when exposed to moisture. | All our furniture is designed to accommodate natural wood movement. Adhering to the recommended maintenance routine will help minimize movement. |
Minor warping and bending | This refers to the changes less than 5mm per 1m length in the shape and dimensions of a piece of wood. These variations are influenced by grain direction and fluctuations in climate, causing the wood to shrink or swell. | Some warping may occur over time and across seasons, but it should remain within acceptable limits, as indicated in the table above. Adhering to the recommended maintenance routine will help prevent excessive warping. |
Scratches | Wood can develop scratches with regular use, especially on surfaces that are frequently in contact with objects. | Scratches can be treated with furniture wax to help conceal and protect the affected area. |
